Custom Choke Tubes - Frequently Asked Questions

Custom Choke TubeWhy aren't Drakekillers ported?
The main reason is porting can cause functioning problems with semi automatic shotguns in cold weather or dirty guns. Porting reduces recoil. Reducing recoil may affect gas and recoil operated shotguns.

How does a Drakekiller shoot lead shot?
You will get full choke patterns with most lead hunting loads. The higher the autonomy of the shot the tighter it will shoot.  Larger shot typically shoots tighter patterns.

I am not the best shot, will I be handicapped shooting a Drakekiller?
The Drakekiller might not be the best choice for you. You might be better off by using a more open choke and limiting yourself to closer shots. The Drakekiller is designed for longer range shooting, and not everyone can take advantage of it.

Why aren't my current loads listed on your list of approved loads?
Pellet quality is very important for longer shots. If a manufacturer uses poor quality pellets, they won't be on the list.  Even some of the premium shells have poor quality pellets. One manufacturer has poor quality wads, and with their BB size shot, the pellets are going through the wad causing damage to the choke tube.

Can I use the Drakekiller in another barrel with the same style choke?
If the bore diameter is the same.  If it is larger, you cannot because the constriction will be too tight. If the bore diameter is smaller, it would be okay, but it will not shoot as tight as it is intended to shoot.

Why don't you have ultra high velocity loads listed with the approved load list?
There is a couple of reasons for this.  I do not buy the speed kills theory.  Good patterns with the right sized pellets kill if the shot is on target.  Shotgun pellets are round unlike a bullet that has a high ballistic coefficient. You are basically shooting a bunch of round balls.  The fact is the faster the pellet starts out (a round ball) the faster it slows down.  A pellet starting out at 1550 fps will be traveling the about same speed at fifty yards as a pellet starting out at 1400 fps.  Also, ultra fast steel loads remove pellets to get the added room for the extra powder. The result is fewer pellets.

How did you come up with the pellet size for your approved loads?
You want a load that has enough pellets in a thirty inch circle, with a shot size that will penetrate enough to kill consistently. To kill mallard sized ducks at fifty yards, you need a pellet count in the mid 80s and a pellet size of number 2 to penetrate for consistent kills.  The Drakekiller approved loads for late season large duck loads will meet these criteria.
